Section 28 Reflection

This year marks 20 years since Section 28 was repealed. The impact of this hateful legislation is still felt by many to the current day. The law, which was enforced under the Local Government Act 1988 banned local authorities and schools from ‘promoting homosexuality’.

Following mass protests from LGBTQ+ campaigners and activists, Section 28 was removed in Scotland in 2000 and in the rest of the United Kingdom in 2003.

Despite the vast steps taken forward, recent petitions have attempted to remove LGBTQ+ topics from the curriculum in our schools.

It is essential that the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in compulsory areas of learning continues to be permanently integrated into the curriculum.
